Light House Lodge

The Deposit Electric Company
The Light House lodge is located on the former site of the Deposit Electric Company hence the name "Light House".   It was reported that the Deposit Electric Company began a search in Late 1899 for some suitable locations in which to develop water power and purchased the old Collett Excelsior Mill property and water privilege at Stilesville in October, 1900.  The old buildings of the Mill were promptly dismantled and a new five foot high dam was constructed across the West Branch of the Delaware River.  In March of 1901, construction of the Deposit Electric Company began and consisted of buildings to house the water wheels and turbine.  In January of 1902, the electric company began transmitting power to the village of Deposit and also provided power to the surrounding communities of Stilesville, Hancock, McClure, Cadosia, Hambletville and Oquaga Lake.   The plant suffered a major setback in October, 1903, when hit by a devastating flood but was repaired and placed back in service only to be destroyed by fire on April 18th, 1914.  The plant was again  rebuilt and was in operation until it burned again in the early 1920's.

To this day the foundation and pieces of the wall structure as well as the diversion raceway are still visible and are always a source of conversation.
